>>What is Progetto Babele?
Progetto Babele (PB) is a free, non-periodical literary magazine dedicated to entertainment literature. Founded in 2002 in Cork (West Ireland) by Marco R. Capelli, PB was created with the (ambitious) goal of periodically presenting a selection of the best works by writers (both emerging and established) active on the internet. In this sense, the magazine was born in stark contrast to the trends of the web at the time, which saw the peak popularity of "container" websites where anyone could publish their literary works without censorship or filtering. These sites quickly lost favor with readers due to the overwhelming volume and highly variable quality of the content. Whether PB’s more traditional format will fare better remains to be seen.
The spirit of Progetto Babele is encapsulated in its subtitle, literature for fun: everything we do is done without taking ourselves too seriously (while acknowledging our limits) but also without succumbing to the temptation of pure entertainment. Instead, we strive to offer readers a well-balanced mix of fiction (including genre fiction), criticism, and reflection.

>> The Magazine
Despite its digital medium, Progetto Babele aligns with traditional literary magazines, publishing approximately 70 pages per issue, including stories, poems, monographs, reviews, and carefully selected critical essays submitted by readers from around the world. From the internet, the magazine draws its naturally internationalist vocation and its ideal place on one of the infinite shelves of the web’s equally vast virtual library, a distant but related cousin of the one imagined by Borges.
The magazine was designed for print, formatted as a typography product but distributed for free in PDF format. instead of being printed on paper. Readers who, like the undersigned, prefer not to read on screens can easily print the magazine themselves.
It is also possible subscribe for free to the magazine. In this case, the PDF will be sent by email immediately after publication.
The concept is simple: the magazine is distributed for free because the internet eliminates distribution costs, while printing costs are passed on to readers.
Some free printed copies are available, on request, for libraries, schools or reviews. It is also possible to purchase printed copies through print-on-demand.
Each number distributes about 2000 copies.

Since 2003, the magazine has been complemented by a book series, I libri di PB (editorial director and graphic design manager: Marco R. Capelli).
The aim, still within a semi-amateur context, is to present authors who truly have something to say, independent of current trends and fashions.
All books are printed in paperback format (A5, black-and-white with a color cardstock cover) and include a detailed critical preface.
It should be noted that Progetto Babele is not a publishing house and does not accept manuscripts, novels, or short story collections for review. Published authors are contacted exclusively by invitation.

The website is not the magazine itself, as is typical for e-zines, but rather a tool that supports its presentation, distribution, content recollection and evaluation and contact management.
In other words, the website is to the magazine what a bookstore is to a book.
In terms of numbers, the website currently has
143,578,405 visits, a periodic newsletter reaching
8,111 subscribers and
3,423 collaborators, number that includes approximately 300 libraries, publishing houses, and cultural institutions in Italy and abroad.
The website also offers EXTRA content beyond the magazine, including:
Reading recommendations (author biographies);
Interviews (to writers and artists, almost unknown or famous);
Service Station (advices and tips for aspiring and established authors);
Review Archive (books, movies, music, webzines and magazines, etc.);
Contests & Announcements section (one of the most visited sections of the site!);
Bookshop (where it is possible to browse and buy i "Libri di PB")
And the archive of the back issues of the magazine, that can be either downloaded or read online, as well as a full searchable archive of all the articles, poems, translations and short stories ever published in the magazine.
Each contributor has a personal page, showing both his bio and the list of the material published on the magazine. The personal page can also be used to submit new texts to the journal and to monitor the approval process.
The Free Audiobooks section is also very popilar and counts now
